BUGGLING ELK HUNT
The North American elk, or wapiti, is the largest form of the red deer species Cervus elaphus. "Elk" is the name by which most Canadians know this majestic deer. "Wapiti, meaning "white rump," is the Shawnee Indian name and the common name preferred by scientists, because the animal known as an "elk" in Europe is not a red deer at all but a close relative of the North American moose. Other red deer, smaller and belonging to several sub-species, are found throughout the northern hemisphere: in Scotland and continental Europe, in North Africa, and in Asia. Unlike other deer, elk have upper canine, or "eye," teeth. These teeth are a hangover from earlier evolutionary stages and now serve no apparent purpose. Their smooth rounded surface has made them attractive as jewellery. In the 1800s many elk were killed just to obtain the canine teeth.
#404. Guided Quality Elk Hunt in Alberta
Excellent Hunting for Canadian Rutting Bulls
Alberta is the place to hunt when it comes to big elk, actually the state record for an elk is 419+. The hunting area is comprised of almost 500,000 acres and it has four major watercourses and valleys running through it. The country is a rugged foothill next to the Rocky Mountains. It does not lend itself to hunting any other way but on foot. However, excellent hunting can be found within a ten-minute drive of the camp. Many non-migratory resident herds of elk are scattered throughout the Foothills and the boreal mixed forest. Most of the Foothills are managed for trophy bulls with a minimum six points rule in effect. Several exceptional bulls are taken each year in this region. The hunt takes place during the elk rut. The weather is generally mild with next to no mosquitoes. Three hundred plus inch bulls are fairly common. Hunting pressure is very light, so you won't see many hunters.
