This video is about an Alaskan wilderness bowhunt for moose on the Moose John River. I was hunting with my bowhunting buddy, Mike Misch. We floated through 120 miles of wilderness in rafts provided by Jay Massey. We flew out of McGrath. We were plagued with problems right from the start. When we got to McGrath we found out that our bush pilot's plane broke down and he wouldn't have parts for another week. We booked a flight with another air service, but then bad weather stranded us there for 2 more days. When we finally flew out to our drop off spot, we met Jay Massey who informed us that 2 weeks of rain had left the river swollen and raging. Instead of having to hike 9 miles to base camp, we would have to hike 14 miles to avoid having to make a dangerous river crossing. After hiking for 8 hours in the rain we got to base camp and found out that the river was too high and dangerous to float. We had to wait at least 2 more days. Then we suddenly discovered that the person that sold us our licenses had sold us a moose tag and a fishing license instead of a hunting license. I had to hike back out and fly back to McGrath to fix our license problem. We were in Alaska for one full week before we got to start our float because of all the delays. When we finally started our float, it was an unforgettable adventure even though we didn't get a moose. We, as greenhorn moose hunters did everything wrong. It was my most memorable Alaskan Hunt and it inspired me to write 2 poems, "Wilderness" and "The Pathfinder" . "The Pathfinder", was inspired by Jay Massey. He was a writer, a traditionalist and adventurer who, unfortunately passed away from cancer in 1997. He also is responsible for our conversion to traditional equipment. Jay demonstrates flint knapping on this video also. This video and the poems are dedicated to him. When you watch this video you'll be able to ride the wild river with us and share the thrill of the hunt and the frustration of having to deal with a myriad of problems. Jay Massey wrote an article about this hunt that was published in "Traditional Bowhunter Magazine". Thanks for looking! |
